What are the Pros and Cons of Corian® Countertops?

PROS CONS
Offered in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Can be more expensive than other countertop surfaces.
Seamless look. Very durable. Vulnerable to hot pans and stains; may crack as it cools down.
Virtually stain-proof because it is nonporous. Potential to be discolored if a heavy object falls on it.
Chips, dents and scratches can be repaired easily. Although scratches can be sanded out, a cutting board should be used.
Flexibility allows the formation of decorative shapes and an integral sink.
Can provide the look and feel of stone or marble surfaces.

Pros:

  • Wide variety of colors and patterns: One advantage to Corian® is that you can choose from a large selection of colors and patterns. This will almost guarantee that you can find the right countertop to match your kitchen or bathroom decor.
  • Easy to clean and maintain: Corian® Countertops are very low maintenance and are not affected by typical household cleaners. Most dirt on solid surface countertops can be removed with soapy water or with an ammonia-based cleanser. Also, the surface can be disinfected with a solution created from the dilution of household bleach. Solid counters are water resistant and do not allow mildew and bacteria to penetrate its surfaces.
  • Stain-resistant: Corian® Countertops are non-porous, which means spills won’t seep into the material and cause stains.
  • Seamless: The seams on Corian® Countertops are virtually invisible, and are less apparent than other countertop products. This will make your countertop appear to be one piece.

Cons:

  • May scratch easily: One disadvantage of Corian® is that it may have a tendency to scratch from knives or other sharp objects. Fortunately, scratches can be buffed out by hand, burns can be sanded away, stains do not sink in, and even severe damages to the surface can be repaired in virtually all instances, avoiding the need for replacement.
  • Not very heat resistant: While Corian® Countertops are great for the kitchen, caution must be used with hot pots and pans.

Are Corian® Countertops Stain-Resistant?

A Corian® kitchen or bathroom countertop is extremely stain-resistant. Since Corian® is a non-porous material, stains can’t penetrate its surface. This also makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze.

Corian® Countertops are non-porous, meaning they are also mold, mildew, and bacteria-resistant when maintained properly. This is especially important to families with young children. With Corian® Countertops you can be confident that your countertop can be cleaned thoroughly and not cause any health hazards.

Another benefit of Corian® Countertops is that it will never require sealing. Most countertops will require additional sealing after installation, meaning more expenses down the road.

Are Corian® Countertops Resistant to Heat?

Even though Corian® is capable of remaining undamaged in temperatures of up to 212ºF (100ºC), we advise against placing a hot pot directly on the surface or exposing it to other sources of high heat such as a flame. In the event that your counter is damaged by heat, it can usually be repaired. To prevent your Corian® kitchen Countertops from this type of damage, use a hot pad or a trivet to protect the surface from hot pans, or heated appliances.

How to Clean Corian Countertops?

Corian® is quick and simple to clean. Your Corian® bathroom or kitchen countertop can be washed with soapy water and a mild ammonia-based cleaner on a daily basis. Minor scratches, scuffs, burns or even discoloration are also usually very easy to repair. For information on repairing major damages and additional tips on how to care for Corian® countertops, we ask that you contact us at Express Countertops or visit our Corian® specific Care & Maintenance section.

Does Corian® Require Additional Sealing?

Corian® Countertops require no sealing because of their non-porous nature. This is a distinct advantage over natural stones like Granite. Corian® is an elegantly beautiful material and practically maintenance-free surface that you will certainly enjoy for many, many years to come.
