Laminate |
A laminate is a material constructed by uniting two or more layers
of material together. |
It is inexpensive and
low-maintenance. It has a smooth surface that is easy to clean. |
The top is susceptible to
damage from sharp knives and hot pans. Once damaged, it cannot be
easily repaired. |
| Solid Surface |
Solid-surfacing is a sheet of
synthetic material that resembles natural stone.
|
It is strong and
self-supporting. |
It can be cut easily by sharp knives. Hot pans will leave a
permanent discoloration.
|
| Engineered Stone |
Engineered stone is a
composite material comprising of rock and resin. It’s usually made
out of a mixture of 93% quartz and 7% polyester resin. |
Quartz of the hardest of
all natural substances. |
One of the priciest options
for kitchen countertops. |
| Granite |
Granite is a type of natural
stone. It is tough, elegant, and virtually maintenance-free. |
When properly sealed,
granite is impervious to cuts, scrapes, burns and stains. |
Though not as rare anymore,
granite is still very expensive. And what most people wouldn’t
expect, granite also requires periodic sealing. |
| Marble |
Marble is a metamorphic rock
most commonly used for sculpting. |
It boasts similar qualities
to granite in terms of appearance and permanence. |
It’s more absorbent than
granite and thus tends to stain more readily. |
| Soapstone |
Soapstone is a metamorphic
rock. It is relatively soft (because of the high talc content) and
may feel soapy when touched, hence the name. |
Usually comes in rich and
deep colors to match any décor and has a smooth feel to it. |
Requires maintenance and
may crack with consistent use. |
| Concrete |
Concrete consists of cement,
aggregate, water and admixtures. It is a tough and reliable choice
for countertops. |
Concrete countertops are
very graceful, not thick and clunky as most people might think. The
finish surface is smooth to the touch and polished to a low sheen. |
Not everyone wants a
countertop that'll last a lifetime. |
