Design Your Dream Countertops

Material Description Advantages Disadvantages Cost
Laminate A laminate is a material constructed by uniting two or more layers of material together. Its advantages easily help to make it one of the best countertops available. It is inexpensive and low-maintenance. It has a smooth surface that is easy to clean. The top is susceptible to damage from sharp knives and hot pans. Once damaged, it cannot be easily repaired. From $5 to $20 per square foot.
Solid Surface Solid-surfacing is a sheet of synthetic material that resembles natural stone. It is strong and self-supporting. It can be cut easily by sharp knives.  Hot pans will leave a permanent discoloration. From $40 to $150 per square foot
Engineered Stone Engineered stone is a composite material comprising of rock and resin. It’s usually made out of a mixture of 93% quartz and 7% polyester resin. Quartz is one of the best countertops because it is made out of one of the hardest of all natural substances. One of the priciest options for kitchen countertops. From $40 to $125 per square foot.
Granite Granite is a type of natural stone. It is tough, elegant, and virtually maintenance-free. When properly sealed, granite is impervious to cuts, scrapes, burns and stains. Though not as rare anymore, granite is still very expensive. And what most people wouldn’t expect, granite also requires periodic sealing. From $30 to $200 per square foot.
Marble Marble is a metamorphic rock most commonly used for sculpting. It boasts similar qualities to granite in terms of appearance and permanence. It’s more absorbent than granite and thus tends to stain more readily. From $30 to $100 per square foot.
Soapstone Soapstone is a metamorphic rock. It is relatively soft (because of the high talc content) and may feel soapy when touched, hence the name. Soapstone is one of the best countertops because it comes in rich and deep colors that willmatch any décor and also has an intoxicatingly smooth feel to it. Requires maintenance and may crack with consistent use. From $50 to $200 per square foot.
Concrete Concrete consists of cement, aggregate, water and admixtures. It is a tough and reliable choice for countertops. Concrete countertops are very graceful, not thick and clunky as most people might think. The finish surface is smooth to the touch and polished to a low sheen. Not everyone wants a countertop that’ll last a lifetime. From $75 to $200 per square foot.
